The museum displays the collection of Peter and Irene Ludwig, originally from Cologne. The exhibit focuses on the last fifty years of modern art in general, and on the last ten years of modern Hungarian art in particular.
The building, called the Palace of Arts, overlooks the Danube, and it is designed to fuse practicality, transparency and functional flexibility. The ground floor houses a café, storerooms (for catalogues and publications) and workshops. The first floor houses temporary exhibitions, along with an auditorium, and an event hall with special lighting. The permanent exhibition is displayed on the second and third floor, the latter receiving natural light from the ceiling, through a special lighting technology, producing different lighting effects through a flat foil placed under the suspended ceiling.
The exhibition rooms link with interactive demonstration rooms, a library, and an activity center for children.
