The museum was founded in 1996, based on an exhibition, which featured the development of gas production and distribution in Budapest. The collection included several pictures, documents and related items. This exhibition was later enlarged, and was named “Gas Distribution is 149 Years Old in the Capital”. It covers the following areas of interest: Gas lighting in the continent, gas lighting in Hungary, gas distribution in Budapest, building of gas factories, development of gas distribution, advertising from the 1930s, destruction of the Second World War and subsequent reconstruction, technical development, gas appliances.
